Symella

According to Wikipedia, As of December 2005, Gnutella is the third-most-popular file sharing network on the Internet. You can find almost anything on Gnutella network, some are legal, and some are not. With Symella, you can find something to read (ebooks), something to listen (music), and even something to watch (videos). It is a good idea to use Wifi instead of 3G/EDGE/GPRS, unless you have unlimited data plan.

This open source program was brought by people that developed Symtorrent. You can download Symella from: http://symella.aut.bme.hu.

SymTorrent

According to wikipedia, Bittorent is a method of transfering large data. SymTorrent is a Bittorent client for Symbian OS Series 60 2nd and 3rd edition. So why do we need to transfer large data using your phone? Well, some sites prefer to use bittorrent even for not-so-large data, so you will need this program sometime. Downloading MP3 from the Internet is also easier done using bittorrent protocol.

This client has many features, from the homepage: It supports downloading multiple torrent files at the same time, is capable of both downloading and uploading and can save the status of your unfinished torrents, so you can resume the downloads after restarting the application.

You can download SymTorrent from: http://www.aut.bme.hu/portal/SymTorrent.aspx?lang=en.

ScreenSnapS60

My only problem with Screenshot (Screen capture program by Antony Pranata) is that it sometimes have a problem capturing Open GL programs (such as Bantumi). I tries another program called ScreenSnapS60, but unfortunately the problem is the same.

The only advantage of this program is that you can select the notification for sucessful screen capture operation. This program can set the quality of the JPEG file with better precission compared to Screenshot, but it can not alter the compression level for PNG files (Screenshot can). Other than that i think this program has the same feature set compared with Screenshot.

I think I will stick with screenshot, but may be in some cases this program is better for you.

You can download this program from: http://www.terramobilis.com/.

S60Dict for 3rd Edition

Update: Certificate has been updated (in the previous version you will get Certificate Expired message).

dict.pngI have used the Dictionary program for a while, but I think the application is not enough for me. Some limitations that I dont like are: only one dictionary, there is no listing of adjacent words if I mistyped the word that I looked for, from the definition page, I have to press two keys to go back to the main page.

I like S60Dict, an offline dictionary engine for DICT databases. It has all the features that I want, both bilingual (available from http://freedict.org) and definition dictionaries (including English definition) can be downloaded freely.

Unfortunately S60Dict is only available for 1st and 2nd edition devices. But this application is open source, so I decided to port this application to 3rd edition. It only took me a couple of hours to do it, and I think the result is OK (it can adjust orientation and screen size changes, it uses SVG for the icon, etc). I have only tested this application on Nokia E61 and on emulator, please tell me if you found a problem on other mobile phone models.

Nokia Podcasting

If you often use different operating systems (dual boot), or using many different computers, then synchronizing a podcast to an iPod is burdensome. It will be really nice if Apple created an iPod that can synchronize itself using wireless network. Meanwhile, you can use your 3rd edition mobile phones to do the same.

The nokia podcast is a podcast manager for 3rd edition phones. It can search podcast, subscribe, and download podcast. You can play the episodes you have downloaded using the media player in you phone.

You can download this software from: http://blogs.s60.com/nokiapodcasting/.
